Spice Quarter – A Hot Subscription Commerce Startup

Spice-Quarter Featured

Husband and wife team, Megna and Aarjit, created a monthly subscription box based off their love of food, and recipes handed down over generations.

Here they share their story on how they got started and why people love their product.

Please introduce yourself (any co-founders) and your startup?

Spice Quarter Instagram ImageSpice Quarter was founded by Megna and Aarjit, a husband and wife duo from Sydney. Both coming from a heritage of spice blenders, their mothers and grandmothers had a spice recipe for everything from family favourite meals to a winter cold.

They saw the opportunity to use their family heritage to create a range of dry spice blends that packed all the flavours needed to create a stunning home meal and combined it with simple recipes that use common pantry ingredients.

Spice Quarter is a monthly spice subscription box. Every month subscribers get three new gourmet spice blends from around the world delivered to their homes. They also get three matching recipe cards with cooking steps, ingredients and times.

Megna says, “At Spice Quarter, we combine traditional recipes for spice blends from around the world with modern convenience and simple ingredients to appeal to a wide range of customers and their tastes. We also post recipe videos on our website and offer useful tips and guides for home cooks.”

How did you go from idea, to MVP and launch?

Co-founder Megna came up with the idea for Spice Quarter when she was frustrated that a recipe she wanted to try needed several expensive spices in only small quantities. “I realised that many Australian families and home cooks face the same dilemma. How are you supposed to experiment with different cuisines when the key flavour ingredients are expensive and difficult to source?”

It was following this incident that the idea for Spice Quarter was born. Her husband and co-founder Aarjit is a Food Scientist and has worked in the Australian food industry for many years.

“My experience working in the industry enabled me to understand what the Australian consumer really wants. I realized that there is a gap in the market for a range of dry spice blends that would be both convenient and easy to use.”

What challenges did you face during this period and how did you overcome them?

It took several months to perfect the offering and even longer to build a collection of spice blends and recipes. We hosted many dinner parties and invited friends to give us feedback on all our recipes and we studied food trends to understand the ingredients and cuisines that are popular amongst home cooks

During this journey to build and launch your startup what is one thing you look back on with a sense of achievement?
