Famly is a true passion project founded by two mothers looking to solve the age old issue of keeping your children entertained.
Learn how they went from idea to MVP and are now focused on acquiring customers before expanding across the nation.
Please introduce yourself (any co-founders) and your startup?
We are two co-founders passionate about improving kids and families’ planning activities. I, Hadassa Rorke (CEO), am an experienced sales & operations manager. I have built up Groupon’s International Sales & Customer-service teams in EMEA LATAM & APAC; I am also a mother of two girls; Farina Schurzfeld is an experienced entrepreneur, as a founding team member of Airtasker & TSL.
Famly – is the first mobile app in Australia to discover and book activities with and for kids
How did you go from idea, to MVP and launch?
As a mother of 2 kids, I was always looking for fun things and activities to do with my children. I quickly realised that searching multiple websites is too time consuming, annoying and confusing. That’s why we decided to build an app that provides all the information needed for anyone having children. This includes mums, dads, grand-parents, pregnant women, caretakers etc. – all part of our famly.
Once the decision was made, we worked out a design and who would produce the MVP app for us. While the developers were doing their part, we started working on the content for the app, signing up activity providers for the Eastern Suburbs in Sydney (which we decided would be the starting point for famly) We have been super happy with our first result – soft launched for iOS & Android, but there is still a lot to do.
What challenges did you face during this period and how did you overcome them?
The challenges come when you are juggling raising two awesome little girls and are passionate about the app as well.
There never seem to be enough hours in a day to do it all!
But to be honest, if you believe in what you do, validate that what you are doing has potential and have some money that you can spend – do it! No Risk – No Fun!
Now the next step is to find customers.
During this journey to build and launch your startup what is one thing you look back on with a sense of achievement?
We validated what we thought will disrupt the market, always ready to pivot to make this story a success! The biggest achievement is to stay happy with what your doing. You need to stay true to yourself and your values
How is your startup going and what do you aim to achieve in the next 3, 6, 12 months?
Famly has soft launched into the app stores; strategy is to find investors, get our first bookings through the app; expand in and around Sydney and launch Melbourne, possibly NZ and start exploring into the Asian market.
